Chapter II: The Shed
Chapter II: The Shed

Sunday – 6:37 AM

As the sun came over the tree line, the survivors worst fears came true. Although they were in what could be considered a remote location, the houses that could be seen were clearly housing the infected. The house across the road's front door was wide open, from their vantage point, a pair of legs could be seen laying in the entry way. A body laid in the front yard, face down. Dead had a whole new meaning though as the body started to rise. Up on two knees to one knee, to finally up on it's feet. The body stumbled slowly back into the house, over the legs lying in the entry way and out of sight.

Wheeler: “Well, I guess that answers whether they're the fast zombies or slow zombies.”

Steve: “So we know we have a pretty good shot of outrunning them. Only thing we have to worry about is large quantities of them in any one place.”

Compton: “I still think we need to hold out here. The army, national guard, S.W.A.T., someone will come around, and when they do, we can be right here, holed up and waiting for them.”

Cozmo: “Well, for now, we need to at least get to the shed out back and get what we can get out of there. Is there anything in here in case something is out there?”

Ratty: “Yeah....we have something...”

Ratty disappeared into the master bedroom. He emerged with what would hopefully would be the last line of defense for the survivors. Ratty laid on the dining room table five pistols. All of them 9mm pistols.

Ratty: “All of them are loaded...I think two of us should go to the shed while two more be on the lookout. Everyone else should stay here.”

Cowboy: “Has anyone used a pistol before? I say they should go out there if they have...”

Numbers: “I've used one, but I don't want to go out there.”

Ratty: “I'll go...”

Shawn: “I'll go too. There's nothing out there, so we can get in and out pretty quick.”

Wheeler: “I'll watch your back.”

Compton: “Me too. Give me a gun.”

From the house to the shed was probably a good 50 yards, and then another 10 yards to nothing but trees. Ratty told them of how behind the shed was about 35 acres trees and forest. Aside from the family across the street, the closest people to where they were was about a mile and a half both ways. So, the odds of them running into any infected were pretty rare. Numbers agreed to watch the house across the street to watch in case the one they saw in the morning decided to stumble across the road to where they were. From where Numbers was stationed, he could see almost the whole house across the road as the last two vehicle's in the driveway partially blocked the view of the other house's garage door. This wouldn't be a problem as Fairplay and Liquid were on the watch from other windows within the house.

Sunday – 7:14 AM

Compton: “Have you ever shot a gun before?”

Wheeler: “No, have you?”

Compton: “No, but I'm not going to let any of them get close to them if they come.”

Wheeler: “Hopefully we won't have to worry about it.”

Shawn opened the back door and looked down the left and right sides of the house. Everything was all clear. They would move on top of one another, all together, towards the shed. They called out to Numbers to make sure he was in place to watch the other house. When he gave the signal, the four headed out to the shed. When they got to the shed, Shawn and Ratty would go in while Compton would watch the right side and Wheeler watched the left side.
They walked out the door and began walking slowly to the shed. Cowboy closed the door and locked it behind them. All four of them were nervous, but none of them showed it. No one knew how an infected would react to their presence, and or even how many shots to the head it'd take to kill it. Hell...they didn't even know how to accurately shoot the guns to hit em in the head. Much like Wheeler said...hopefully they didn't have to worry about it.
They get to shed to see a bolt lock on the door...

Compton: “Do you have the key?”

Ratty: “No, I didn't even know about this. Usually they just leave it open. It must be in the house.”

Compton: “So, we need to go back to the house and look for the key?”

Ratty: “Yeah, but I don't know where it might be. And my mom might have it on her keychain, so there might not even be a key.”

Shawn: “Well, what's in here that we need?”

Ratty: “I know there's at least two more guns in here as well as some other blunt weapons and supplies. Like 2 x 4's we can board the windows with if we stay.”

Compton: “Ok, so we need to find the key then...”

Shawn: “Not necessarily.”

Shawn turned to the lock, pointed his gun at it, and pulled the trigger. The shot went off in the silence as though a bomb had gone off in the backyard. Certainly loud enough in the silence of the morning to be heard from a mile and a half away.

Compton: “Perhaps we should have thought this through a bit better before going through with it?”

The shot alarmed those left in the house as those on watch duty in the front went running to the back of the house to see what happened. The seven of them packed the windows on the back side of the house to see what happened.

Numbers: “What the hell happened?”

Steve: “Shawn shot the lock off the shed for some reason.”

Numbers: “That was really freaking loud man. I bet somebody heard it and will come here and see what's up.”

Cozmo: “Yeah, or maybe something else heard it and will come...”

Steve: “Who's watching the thing in the other house if you guys are here?”

Numbers: “Shit, whoops...”

Numbers, Fairplay and Liquid all go back to their respective windows, but they don't see anything from their perspectives. All anyone can see in the house is the legs in the entryway. No shadows, no lights, no movement within the house. Just eerie silence.

Compton: “Ok, let's just get this over with before something comes to check out what that noise was. Get inside and get the shit and Wheeler and I will watch your backs.”

Ratty: “Ok, c'mon Shawn.”

Ratty and Shawn enter the shed. Ratty fumbles for the light switch as there's only one window in the back of the shed. The light flicks on and they take a look around. There's a wardrobe against the back wall, Ratty points to it and says that the extra guns are in there. Shawn opens the wardrobe and finds a shotgun – a SPAS-12, and two assault rifles – an M4 Carbine and an AK-47. Shawn grabs the guns and puts them on a cart that's sitting near the door. Shawn goes back to the wardrobe and notices some boxes in the bottom of it. He opens to boxes to see sticks of dynamite ready to be lit.

Shawn: “Why are there sticks of dynamite in here Ratty?”

Ratty: “Nothing surprises me in here man. But, I can see why we have the lock on the shed now I guess.”

Ratty looks under some shelves and finds 3 large plastic gas tanks, usually used to refill the lawnmower and weed eater. He loads them onto the cart. Shawn grabs a few shovels, a rake, and a backhoe. He puts them all on the cart. The cart is going to be difficult to wheel out of there and into the house, but the chances of defending themselves are exponentially higher with these goods.

Ratty: “We can't put all these 2 x 4's on the cart to board up the windows and doors. Do you want to make a second trip out here or just have one of us wheel the cart and one of us carry all the wood?”

Shawn: “Yeah, I can carry all this wood and you can push the cart in, we can have Compton and Wheeler watch out. We prolly need to hurry though in case anything heard that gun shot.”

Ratty helps Shawn grab the rest of the wood and pack it on his back so he can carry it in. Ratty goes over to the cart and wheels it out of the shed. Shawn and Ratty both exit the shed and close the door behind them. They start the walk back to the house. They get about ten feet from the shed when they hear a noise coming from side of the house.

Wheeler: “You guys hear that?”

Ratty: “Yeah...we should probably hurry up.”

They try and pick up the pace and move towards the house when from around the corner stands the man they saw rise up in the neighbor's yard. He's stumbling around the corner of the house...towards the back door. The four of them stop in their tracks. Too scared to say anything. The man's face is bloody and his eyes are pure white. No pupil, no eye color, just white. His mouth is open and his left arm looks to be on backwards, it's most certainly broken. He's wearing a flannel shirt as and a pair of jeans with the left leg ripped off completely. His skin is exposed and it looks green in appearance as if showing the feature of what would be scales from far away, but his skin is dry and chaffed.

Shawn: “Compton, shoot him in the head.”

Compton: “What if I miss and shoot into the house though? We need to get him away from the house.”

It was true, the seven remaining guys in the house had all packed the back side windows when they heard what was going on. No one was watching the front of the house now. No one inside the house could help the four in the yard now...They were all on their own.

Fairplay: “How the hell did he get around all of us?”

Cozmo: “He must have come to the side of the house when Shawn shot his gun and you guys came up here.”

Cowboy: “We need to do something...”

Steve: “What the hell are we gonna do? We can't go out there and we shouldn't draw attention to the house either. It's bad enough we have Rshep trapped in here with us.”

Numbers: “I'm gonna shoot him in the head from behind..”

Liquid: “What if you miss Numbers? You could hit one of them!”

Numbers: “I won't miss, I've shot this gun before..”

Steve: “You're not going to shoot at them Numbers.”

The four outside know that they need to move him away from the house to take a shot at him. So they begin to move to the right, but the man starts toward them. Managing to stay between them and the house. The more the four move right, the more he moves towards the back door of the house.

Shawn: “Compton, just take the shot....we have to get through him to get into the house. We have to kill him.”

Compton: (yelling) “Everyone inside the house get away from the windows, I'm going to take a shot at him!”

Everyone inside the house backs away from the windows into the master bedroom. There's an extremely small window in the room that only a few can see out of, and certainly can't take a shot from in the room. Compton, aims his gun at the man's head...and pulls the trigger. The shot goes wizzing by and hits the back of the house putting a bullet hole in the siding. Compton takes another shot at him and hits him in the shoulder pushing him backwards. The gunshots rain like thunder through the silent morning. The man starts lumbering towards the four again. Another shot goes off the sound of shattered glass fills the air and Ratty falls to the ground holding his leg.
Numbers stands inside the window in the kitchen holding the gun outright aimed at the man. His shot has missed, careened and hit Ratty in the leg, right above the knee. There's a look of shock on everyone's face as Shawn drops the 2 x 4's and kneels down next to Ratty and asks him if he's all right. Compton points the gun at the zombie one more time and takes the shot, he knocks the man down after shooting him right in the chest. The man is moving about face down on the ground. None of the four go near him.

Compton: “Let's get around to the front of the house and go in the front door.”

Shawn: “Wheeler, help me carry Ratty around to the front.”

Wheeler: “Who's going to push the cart?”

Compton: “We'll worry about the cart once we get Ratty inside the house.”

Wheeler and Shawn pick Ratty up off the ground as the infected man still writhes about on the ground. The man is practically a few feet from the back door, so going that way is not an option. The four begin to go around the backside of the house as the guys inside move towards the front door to let them in. When Cowboy gets to the front door, he sees a very unsettling sight.

Cowboy: “Uh...guys, tell them to turn around and go back...”

Steve: “What? Why?”

But it didn't take Steve long to see why. All of the gunfire had certainly attracted a crowd. There were at least ten infected in the front lawn alone. All of them lumbering slowly towards the house. By now, the four on the outside were on the right side of the house. Cozmo ran to the window in the spare bedroom and began banging on it. He was screaming through the window that they needed to turn around because the front yard was full of them. This drew the attention of the front yard crowd as they began moving towards the right side of the house.
The four turned around and began going back to the back side of the house. When they came around the corner, they saw the first man standing inches away from the back door. Two more men were coming around the left side of the house's corner as well.

Compton: “We have to get to the shed...”

The four moved as quick as they could. Carrying Ratty towards the shed. Compton grabbed the shotgun and the AK-47 off the cart as they passed it. They moved towards the shed, grabbing the attention of the 3 infected in the backyard. The four entered the shed and sat Ratty on the ground...Shawn began to apply some first aid to help Ratty's leg not become infected or have him bleed to death. Wheeler and Compton found an extra 2 x 4 and applied it under the doorknob to help keep it closed. When that was done, Wheeler and Compton moved the near empty wardrobe in front of the lone window....

Shawn: “Now what do we do..?”

Compton: “We're going to have to figure out a way out of here...”

In the house, the same thing was being talked about though...Numbers sat in the kitchen chair in a state of shock. Certainly not his intentions to disable Ratty, but he was only trying to help.

Steve: “What the fuck were you doing Numbers? You fucking shot Ratty man....”

Fairplay: “Put the gun on the table Numbers...”

Numbers puts the gun on the table..and sits in his chair in silence.

Cowboy: “We're gonna need to block all entry ways so that they can't get in. There's gotta be like 10 of them out there now.”

Cozmo: “We need to find a way to communicate with them and help get them in here too...”

Then Craig said what everyone was thinking but didn't want to say...

Craig: “It may be too late to save them now...we need to start worrying about how we're going to get out of here...”
