Chapter IV: The Truck
Compton: “You're not going with us, you're staying here.”
Wheeler: “We can't just leave him out here...”
Compton: “We're not going to kill him, but we can't afford to save him. What if we took him to the house and became infected and killed us?”
Shawn: “Just take me over there and quarantine me if you're worried...”
Compton: “I'm not the one who should be worried...you should be. You can't seem to remember if she bit you or not...”
Sunday – 11:08 AM
Compton and Wheeler picked Ratty up off the ground. Ratty handed Wheeler back his pistol that went flying back when he helped Shawn get back in the shed. Compton looked over to Shawn who was still sitting against the wall. Shawn had his head down. Compton wanted to help, but felt helpless not knowing if Shawn could be helped. Back in the house, things were starting to look even more bleak...With one gun between seven guys, the gun already being used to wound one the guys in the shed. Numbers and Cowboy sat at the kitchen table staring out the window to the shed. Both of them wondering what could be going on in there. Fairplay, Liquid, and Craig were in the living room, just silently watching the infected in the front yard. Just as the television had said, they were beginning to get quicker and almost smarter. One of them walked up to a car in the driveway, and upon seeing it's own reflection in the window, began bashing on the window until the window broke. Two others seemed to be almost fighting with each other when one knocked the other down, the other bent down and attempted to eat the arm of the downed one, it grew disinterested and got back up. Steve came out of the bathroom and closed the door behind him...It killed him not being able to was his hands...
Steve: “Is there any sanitizer in this house?”
And then there was Cozmo...who stood silently in front of a barricaded door. The split pieces of the wooden chair nailed across the door frame created a giant criss crossing 'X' over the door. Cozmo knew that the barricading was designed to keep what was in there away from them, but he couldn't help but feel compelled to know how Rshep was. No one had went and said a word to him since they locked him in there. Not a word had come out of the room...not even a sound. Had he turned? Was he now living undead? Or was he in there sitting silently awaiting his fate?
Steve: “Cozmo...”
Cozmo: “.....”
Steve: “Cozmo...”
Cozmo: “Oh..yeah?”
Steve: “Have you seen any hand sanitizer?”
Cozmo: “No. Just use some dish soap and then wash it off with an ice cube or something.”
The silence had been almost deafening since the four who went to the shed trapped themselves in there. None in the house knew of what had happened behind the shed. They could see the top hatch open, the front door had been busted open, but something was covering it now, and they could see a body laying in front of the door, lifeless. They had all watched and Compton shot the man and pushed his body through the front door, but everything after that is unknown to them. In the living room facing the front yard, there was another conversation altogether...
Fairplay: (whispering) “Isn't this crazy?”
Craig: “I know...we've been joking about it, but there's no way you can plan for it when it happens...”
Liquid: “At least none of us are infected...” The other two stayed silent...Silence had been the magic word all morning. Since early in the morning, silence has defined the day. Everyone stayed silent as the man on the television told them what was going on in the world...everyone had stayed silent as Ratty got shot in the leg...and no one had said anything when Compton was on top of the shed trying to kill the man below him. Though now...there was a sound.
Craig: “What is that?”
Liquid: (checking his phone) “It sounds like someone's phone is vibrating...”
Fairplay: “There's no cell phone service, and the television went out about 20 minutes ago.”
Craig: “It's getting louder...it's coming from outside.”
Fairplay: “It sounds like a car...but why would anyone be driving out here?”
Craig: “The only reason we're not out there driving is because those four are stuck in the shed...and all the infected in the front yard...and because Rshep's truck is blocking us in the driveway.”
The sound got louder and louder...and their intuitions were right. It was a vehicle, and it was flying at a high rate of speed. The truck came into view from down the road as it came over a hill. It looked to be an older truck, it was loud too. The kinda trucks you hear people revving up obnoxiously just to be as loud as possible. The truck was so loud that the four in the shed looked at each other in confusion.
Compton: “What the hell is that?”
Ratty: “It sounds like the guy down the road's truck...maybe he's coming here cause he heard the gunshots.”
Wheeler: “I hope he's not infected...”
As the truck got closer, the three in the living room were joined by Cozmo and Steve. They all mentioned how quick the truck was moving. As it approached the house, it seemed to be almost careening out of control. The closer the truck got, the more they could see. The windshield was bashed in and the passenger door was open. The truck approached the front yard and the driveway in a hurry, the car veered towards the house in a straight line before veering back towards the road. The truck nailed Rshep's truck in the driveway causing it to come to a stop.
Craig: “Holy shit...”
Cowboy: (entering the room) “What was that?”
Steve: “There's a truck...in the driveway...”
In the shed...
Shawn: “What the fuck was that?”
Compton: “It's our ticket out of here...get ready to move the table...”
The truck sat in the driveway. The front passenger side hood and door were pressed against a car as steam poured out of the hood. From what the guys could see, the airbag had gone off and something...a man or a woman was inside the truck. Their head was laying against the back window. It was too tough to see through all the smoke. From the front window, the guys saw infected come around both sides of the house and approach the truck. Two were on the passenger side while the other five or six went around to the driver's side. The guys watched the infected bang on whatever they could...the windows, the door, the hood to get to the body. Eventually breaking the window and pulling the body from the truck...They couldn't see what was happening on the other side of the truck, but blood was everywhere. In the shed, Wheeler and Compton moved the table off of the door. Compton grabbed the shotgun while Wheeler picked up the M4. Compton looked out the hole in the door and saw that the path between the shed and the house was clear. He could not see to the right or left of the shed, but only ahead.
Compton: “When I open this door, Wheeler I want you to look to the left and I'm going to look to the right. Shawn, if you can, help Ratty get to the cart. We need to get the cart into the house.”
Ratty: “What about the 2 x 4's?”
Compton: “Shit...For now, let's just leave it out here...but we need to get the gas tanks, AK-47, and dynamite into the house. They do us no good in the back yard.”
Compton opened the door to the shed and stepped out to the right while Wheeler stepped out behind him and looked left. Shawn leaned over and let Ratty grab his shoulder. Ratty put his arm around Shawn and started limping out the shed door. The four made their way to the cart. Compton grabbed two gas tanks and the AK while Wheeler grabbed the other gas tank and the box of dynamite. They moved to the back door. Compton looked in the window and didn't see anyone. They must have all gone to the front of the house when that boom went off. Compton knocked lightly on the door. No one answered. Time was of the essence, but he didn't want to bash his way into the house. Wheeler stood with his back to Compton facing the shed while Ratty was still being held up by a pretty badly wounded Shawn. Compton knocked again, this time a little louder. In the front of the house, the remaining seven were looking out the front of the house at the truck wreck. All of them in disbelief to what had just happened. None of them could hear the knocking with the noise in the driveway. The focus was just on what the infected were doing...And keeping them out of the house. Compton knocked again, this time a little louder...
Shawn: “Do you think they left?”
Compton: “I dunno, we've been in the shed for a couple hours. I saw them in the window when I was on the roof of the shed, but that was like two hours ago.”
Wheeler: “What if they left?”
Shawn: “Break the door down...”
Compton: “I'm not gonna break the door down. They could be in there...”
Compton hadn't thought of the idea of everyone else leaving them. Surely they wouldn't leave them there like that without trying to get them out. But what if something came up? What if Rshep got out? What if a situation arose where they had to leave the house? He hadn't heard anything. He wanted to knock louder, but if Rshep or anyone was in the house, he didn't want to draw attention to himself.
Compton: “What if Rshep got out? What if there's infected in there?”
Ratty: “Well we'll go around to the front of the house...”
Compton: “No, that's where all the infected went. We can't stay here much longer though.”
Shawn: “Just break the door down, we're the ones with the guns...”
Compton stood at the door a few more seconds...
Compton: “Can you break the door down without completely breaking it Shawn? If they're in there, we're gonna need it to close back..”
Shawn: “Yeah, I can do it.”
Ratty took his arm back from around Shawn and Shawn stuffed his pistol into his pocket. Shawn lowered his shoulder and rammed the back door as hard as he could. He collided with a loud thud, the door not budging. This got everyone in the front of the houses attention. The remaining pistol was sitting on the living room table, Cozmo glanced down and picked up the gun. Another thud came from the back of the house.
Liquid: “What if it's the guys in the shed?”
Cozmo: “What if it's not?”
Cowboy: “What if it's Rshep?”
Shawn stood outside the door, staring at it. It hadn't moved no matter how hard he had run into it. Shawn took his pistol out of his pocket and shot the glass in the door. Glass shattered everywhere. Shawn reached inside and unlocked it from the inside. The other seven heard the glass and formed behind Cozmo, who had the gun. Cozmo started moving towards the kitchen where the back door was. Shawn pointed his pistol towards the doorways to the hallway and the living room. The silence in the house was eerie. Cozmo neared the the doorway to the kitchen while Shawn neared the wall on the other side of the doorway. Cozmo spun off the door frame into the doorway blocking the path, his gun, pointed into the room, Shawn, startled by the sudden movement pointed his gun at Cozmo, a shot went off and a body hit the ground....
